Malta

In Summary

In 2008, Malta was voted the third best dive destination in the world and with warm, calm, crystal clear, tideless waters and over 280km of coast surrounding the Maltese islands, it’s easy to see why.  In Malta you can dive all year round, with each season presenting its own special character and charm. The islands are honeycombed with stunning caves, caverns, wrecks and swim-throughs, to be explored and enjoyed by those who know where to find them.  There’s an abundance of dive sites catering for all levels of diving ability and the development of a number of further artificial reefs provides an even wider variety of diving.  The creation of marine protected areas around the islands has seen an increase in marine life and, combined with reliably excellent visibility, makes for wonderful diving experiences.

Set like precious gems in the purest blue sea, the 5 islands of Malta, Gozo, Comino, Comminotto and Filfa offer the diver and holiday-maker a diverse and captivating experience both above and below the water. The warm clear blue Mediterranean surrounding the islands beckons divers down to discover many hidden delights, most of which are world renowned and recommended by the greatest diving enthusiasts.

The Freedom Adventures dive centre is situated in the north of the island in St Paul's Bay which is perfect for going off diving and ideally set amongst the lively culture that Malta has to offer.

Weather and Climate

Malta's weather and climate are strongly influenced by the sea and have a very characteristic Mediterranean flavour, similar to that found in Southern Italy or Aouthern Greece.

You book your diving holiday with confidence for 12 months of the year in Malta as it has hot, dry summers, warm and sporadically wet autumns, and short, cool winters. No matter what the month the underwater visibility stays incredibly clear and the Mediterranean water temperature rarely goes below 20 degrees.

Dive sites

Malta has a wide and diverse range of dives sites to choose from including gentle reefs that slope away from 5 to 30m, caverns for the beginner to cut their teeth on, in addition to deeper and more adventurous options for the very experienced cave devotee. Also experience some world class wreck diving in depths from 15 to 40m - accessible as both shore and boat dives.

Many of our divers return year after year once they have discovered the hidden gems that these islands have in store.  Diving with Freedom Adventures means tapping into our local knowledge, as well as benefitting from our first class safety standards and our dedication to customer care.

Blue Hole

A shore dive in Gozo that’s sure to put a smile on any diver's face. Entry point, just under the Azure window, is already spectacular in itself. As you pass though an arch in the rock and enter the crystal clear waters in the Blue Hole you begin your descent. At around 5m an opening leads out into the great expanse of the deep blue sea. We have given this a 5 star rating, it’s by far the best of the best as dives go!

Coral Cave

The dive begins crossing a shallow reef, before a steep drop-off to about 30m where the seabed is strewn with large boulders. Following the cliff around to the left you reach the immense open cavern, filled with beautiful coral. Anemones, urchins and smaller fish dwell in the cave and on the wall and peer into the blue for larger life. An average depth of 25m, safe and open, it’s the ultimate in blue water cave diving.

Cirkewwa

Suitable for all levels of experience, Cirkewwa is one of the most popular dive sites on the island and an excellent warm-up dive to begin a holiday. Marine life includes large scorpion fish and lots of fireworms, sea urchins and shoals of small fish. Along the reef is a statue of the Madonna, complete with plastic flowers, an added attraction put there by divers. There are also some arches in the rock to swim through.

Ghar Lapsi

Situated on the South of Malta this is excellent dive in an azure blue and green pool. Fantasitc visibility awaits on entry into the sideways slanting cave which provides some amazing silhouettes. On the reef, orange and green sea grasses sway underneath the waves crashing on the rocks as you look to the surface. A beautifully scenic and relaxing dive.

Zurrieq Bell Tower Cave & Blue Grotto

Located in the South of the island at a very pretty fishing village, the Bell Tower Cave is at a depth of 28m and has three different exit points to insure a safe cave dive. Blue Grotto is made up of beautiful topography and the area is occupied by numerous fish, including painted combers, damselfish, scorpion fish, sting rays and many more.

Carolita Barge

This World War II wreck is explored as a shore dive, with very easy access from Manoel Island. The depth varies from 3 to 21m as the wreck is lying on a sloping bottom. Relatively well preserved, the wreck is teeming with aquatic life and thanks to its very sheltered location, this is a great dive site regardless of wind or weather conditions.

HMS Moari

Located in Marsamxett Harbour, this World War II wreck lies in 16m of water and is very easy to access. Well sheltered and easy to dive with some interesting marine life to be spotted; lots of fireworms, a John Dory, eels and sometimes octopus on and around the wreck and in the sand nearby seahorses are found. When in season a fair amount of sting rays and have also been observed.

L'Ahrax Beach

Located at the North East of the island, entrance is through a narrow inlet by several caves on the surface.  Underwater, the scenery is beautiful, with green sea grass dancing in the swells and some beautiful topography and swim-throughs to enjoy. Expect to see a variety of marine life, including cardinal fish, grey chromis, fish, sea urchins, red seastars, corals and colourful sponges.

Tugboat Rozi

The Rozi is one of our favourite wreck dives on the island. Scuttled as a tourist attraction in 1991, it sits perfectly on a sand base bottom.  The wreck is a 30m harbour tug, full of marine life and is fully intact, with depths ranging between 25 and 35m. Look up from the seabed towards the mast and take in the huge number of wrasse, cardinal fish and more in the beautifully clear, blue water.

UM El Faroud

In 1995 a gas explosion on board sunk the oil tanker that was later scuttled for use as a dive site. Lying at a maximum depth of 36m, the wreck is so big only a portion of it can be seen in one dive. There are some swim-throughs around the bridge and decks and entering the wheel house leads to the lower decks. Sea life includes scorpion fish, barracuda, sea bream and tuna.

Patrol Boat P29

This 50m long patrol boat was scuttled as an attraction for divers on 14th August 2007. It was originally a German minesweeper before seeing service as a patrol boat for the Maltese Navy.  See if you can spot the awesome painting of the tasmanian devil from Looney Tunes on the back of the bridge! Maximum depth is 37m but the entire dive can be done at 25m.

Anchor Bay

Located at Popeye’s Village. The cave at Anchor bay makes for a good start to your holiday's diving. A max depth of 14m and a 20 minute swim gives you time to refresh your skills underwater the marine life is abundant at Anchor Bay, if a little small in size. It includes Moray eels, scorpion fish, cuckoo wrasse and shoals of blue and yellow fish.

2 Tugs Marsascala

Located on the South of the island in the village of Marsascala, the two tugs lie on a sand base bottom at a max depth of 21m. On one dive it is normal to visit both wrecks as they lie only 50m apart. Both tugs are in reasonably good repair and attract a variety of marine life to observe and enjoy.

Comino Island

Located in the middle of Malta and Gozo lies the small island of Comino with a vast selection of caves and reefs. The average depth is 15m on all the dives we do there and the caves are generally very pretty and open and there’s often the chance to spot octopus and spiny lobster. Fish feeding and hunting for shark teeth are just a couple of activities we carry out on Comino.
