Why do we do it..?

Isn't diving underwater unatural... why do we do it; why Scuba dive? The oceans of this planet cover over two thirds of its surface. As a scuba diver, you have the privilege of exploring some of the deep blue in underwater adventures that the rest of the world will never experience first-hand. Beneath the water’s surface, generation after generation of divers have become hooked (excuse the pun!) by vast magnificent caves, bright coral reefs, fast drift currents and wrecks that date back to the world wars and before, all teeming with a never ending array of aquatic life; turtles, rays, octopus, moray eels, dolphins, whales, barracuda, sharks, puffer fish, angel fish, nemos... The diversity of life you are so blessed to observe through scuba is incredible and the beauty of it is, even if the location is the same, no two dives ever will be. Imagine being stood underneath a motorway intersection with bridges and by-passes overhead, each one with vehicles zooming up and down. Underwater, several meters down, looking up is a similar experience but the bridges are shoals and individual fish take the place of vehicles - the difference is the natural beauty of it (and of course, the fact that you’re breathing underwater!). Light streams through the ripples on the surface to the water below, reflecting off the scales of fish, the vivid colours of the coral and everything it touches to create an underwater playground that never ceases in delighting and inspiring divers the world over. Large fish swim into shoals of hundreds of smaller ones and, like a cat among pigeons (except with far more grace and speed), they disperse and dart off, rejoining almost instantly and equally as swiftly, swimming off on their merry way. Of course, there’s also an abundance of lake and quarry dives to to explore, both at home and abroad and the addiction to scuba diving comes from how amazing it feels being a bystander to the aquatic wonders you experience. You too could be a part of it. There are two main types of diving; recreational/fun diving and technical/commercial diving. If you’re interested in diving for the first time, as a hobby, then you’ll be learning to dive recreationally. This is also how the vast majority of technical and commercial divers start out. In recreational diving, you ALWAYS dive with a buddy, for safety and for the shared experience. Breathing underwater for the first time is different for everyone; some people find it to be strangely natural, whilst for others it can take a bit of getting used to. Two things are for sure - it is amazing, and it is the first step into a whole new world. You can learn to dive anywhere in the world, including the UK and a lot of first time divers head for warmer shores where the aquatic life is more colourful and diverse and the waters are... well, warmer! The most popular and easy way to do this is on a diving holiday.
