Did you know that children aged 10 and over can get qualified with PADI as an Open Water Diver?  Increasingly, we take bookings from parents (some who dive, some who want to learn) who want to share the joy of diving with their kids.  Diving's a great confidence builder for children and getting qualified at such a young age means they have the rest of their lives to further enjoy the sport and progress their skill and knowledge.  We asked one of our customers to write a review on what it was like to dive with her family;

"I'm relatively new to diving.  It all started a couple of years ago when, whilst on holiday in Thailand, I got bored of the beach and decided to try something different.  My son James is 11 and having listened to me raving about diving has been on my case ever since to put him through his Open Water course.  Then my mum heard about it and decided she'd like to do it too!  I was busting for an excuse to get away diving so last month we flew off to Lanzarote for a week of underwater fun.  James and Mum did the PADI Open Water referral in the UK before we left so they'd done their classroom stuff and all that was left was four open water dives to complete the course.  I'd done my PADI rescue referral in the UK too so while they were doing their Open water dives, I did my Rescue dives.  By the end of day two, all our training was compete and with our new qualifications, we had four days to enjoy as much fun diving as we could cram in (of course, we left one day for lounging around the pool and eating ice cream on the beach!). 

What an experience it was to dive with James and Mum!  With James, I had to take my "parent" hat off to some degree and overcome the urge to help him carry his gear, not to worry that he was equalising, that he had sufficient buoyancy control to avoid the anemones and so on.  On our first dive, having overcome my initial nerves for his safety, I soon relaxed and realsied how amazingly he'd taken to it.  Pete (our instructor) was fantastic with him (and me and my mum!) - his passion for diving and ability to take James and my mum's faffing in his stride was admirable!  We all felt safe in the knowledge that he'd done this a thousand times before and he took us on some incredible dives.  James' enthusiasm for diving keeps growing; we're already booked in for a week in Malta in August and at an interview with his new secondary school yesterday, when asked what extra-curricular activities he enjoys, he proudly responded "I love diving!".  And I'm proud of him too - he looked so grown up in all his gear and to buddy with him and share the view of rays flying across the ocean floor, angel sharks hiding in the sand, and all manner of other marine life, and blowing air rings to the surface, are memories that will stay with both of us always and we can't wait for next time.  One thing James taught me is that laughing with regs in takes some practice!  I'm delighted that he's enjoyed his experience so much and wants to do it again - by the time he's my age, he'll have been diving for over 20 years!"

Lanzarote is a fantastic place to learn to dive.  Confined dives are carried out in the lagoon which offers a much more interesting introduction that the bottom of a swimming pool and the dive sites around Lanzarote offer lots of shelves at the right levels.  We're experienced in family diving holidays and are here to answer any questions you might have and to help in any way that we can.
