Lanzarote Diving Holidays

In Summary

Rapidly emerging as a popular dive destination, the island of Lanzarote is earning a reputation as one of the most attractive sub-aquatic locations in Europe. The volcanic nature of the island’s surface continues underwater, where beneath the surface lie lava rivers, caves and arches — the dramatic black volcanic rock contrasting sharply with intense white sand and clear blue water.

In Lanzarote, you can dive all year round - from getting up close and personal with angel sharks, to seeing the magnificent lava topographies that Lanzarote’s underwater world has to offer...  soft corals, plentiful caverns, swim-throughs, historic wrecks, sloping sandy areas ideal for training and abundant marine life such as seahorses and various rays.

The real beauty here is that it truly doesn’t matter what level of diver you are, or what training you’re doing; the variety of boat and shore dives in Lanzarote are perfect for all abilities, at every depth. Our friendly PADI - Gold Palm and BSAC - Centre of Excellence diving school will ensure you maximise your diving experience to the fullest.

You’ll be staying in Costa Teguise where nothing is more than a five minute walk away so, if you’re exhausted from all the excitement or swaying after a few drinks, you’ll be back in the comfort of your room in no time.

Weather & Temperature

Lanzarote is often referred as the Hawaii of Europe. You can dive here 12 months of the year and although the sun is powerful in the summer months there’s always the natural air-conditioning breeze from the mid-Atlantic.

The real beauty with diving in Lanzarote is that if on the very odd occasion the local conditions are too rough, we will just take you 45min to the other side of the island where they’ll be just fine. It’s unheard of to not be able to dive.

Dive sites

There are over 20 guided dives to choose from in Lanzarote, each offering unique beauties; sealife, wrecks, corals, caves & caverns and some of the best can also be dived at night too. Below are a selection of our favourite dives to give you an idea of the varirty of dives that are on offer and it's just the beginning, there are so many dives to enjoy in Lanzarote...

Lava Caves

Unique underwater volcanic lava flows from 15-60m. Frequented by a variety of rays such as electric, eagle and butterfly. A volcanic island and cave just off shore is home to shrimps, goat fish, morays and scorpion fish, with angel sharks frequenting the area during the winter months. Although in a protected bay, the dive site is exposed to the strong winds of the Atlantic, so is diveable only in good weather conditions.

Las Salinas

To the North of the island where the underwater scenery is of rocky lava.  The waters here are crystal clear and allow for great panoramic views.  About 50m offshore in 9m,depth, a swim-through hole and many picturesque rocks appear. It is ideal scorpionfish and moray country and also look out for colourful starfish, pen shells, blennie varieties, parrotfish groups, shoals of bream, nudibranchs, trumpet and lizardfish.

Punta Jabillo

A favourite choice for the complete beginner to experience scuba diving in the 200sqm of this protective bay.  The manmade barrier to the open sea is covered in life with hundreds of fish and sea anemones. At the wall there is a mix of warm water from the bay and the cold water from the open sea which washes in barracuda chasing a fish or two and then swimming out on the next big wave.

The Rabat Wreck

A massive transport ship that unfortunately lost its way to the Port close by.  This dive is reached by boat and lying from 18 to 35m, is great for experienced divers. Beginning descent, the whole length of the wreck can be seen, with resident shoals of barracuda frequently spotted, along with some large solitary barracuda which are over 2m in length.  Watch out for morays and scorpion fish too.

Cathedral

Entry via the bay of Playa de la Barrilla. Free descent to 16m, along the reef to the left and over a drop-off which takes you down to the Cathedral at approximately 30m The Cathedral is a huge, no clear surface cave with alcoves of finger coral and glass fish at the far end.  The upper part of the cave is vibrant with soft corals and fauna. This dive is best appreciated with a torch.

The Altar

In the middle of Playa de la Barrilla Bay. This dive commences at the end of the protected bay and is an interesting dive with overhangs on either side where globular anemone, large shrimps and protective arrowhead crabs can be found. Free descent to 10m and down to a depth of approximately 25m. This is also an interesting night dive spot.

The Drop-Off

The top of the reef commences about 20m undulating down to approximately 60m plusand this afternoon dive takes a tour along the top of the reef down to a maximum of 25m. A variety of marine life can be found and the vertical lava wall has many undulations and is mostly covered with tree anemones, together with colourful globular anemones. Occasionally angel sharks are also spotted here.

Pink Coral

Entry via the bay of Playa de La Barrilla. Free descent to 16m, along the reef to the right and along a drop-off which leads to one of the rare pieces of pink coral in an alcove of a lava flow. This site has a lot of fish activity in mornings and is visited by trigger fish, fusiliers, barracuda, shoals of sardines and a variety of other small fish.

The Harbour Wall

This dive begins in the bay of Playa de La Barrilla and gradually leads to a depth of 12 m. The bay is frequented by numerous divers and the fish are fed so marine life is in abundance. Outside of the bay and leading around to the right is a small harbour wall where cuttlefish, octopus and sea horses can be found. This site is a favourite for novice divers. Also an interesting night dive spot.

Blue Hole

Entrance to the dive site is made from the harbour at Puerto Del Carmen, where you can either do a giant stride entry from the stone harbour wall or descend the harbour steps.  Descend around four meters, then down a sandy slope and through a large eel garden at about 20m. The reef is followed around and leads through the Blue Hole tunnel, full of nudibranchs and small shoals of silver fish.

Los Erizos Wreck

A designated a marine conservation site for over 17 years, the site has brilliant visibility and boasts a well established wreck site where sardines, pinfish, turkish wrasse, emperor fish, arrow crabs and large large groupers are in abundance. The site is also sometimes visited by large sting rays and tuna (and angel sharks in the winter).

Punta Tinosa Wrecks

In 2004, three fishing boats were deliberately sunk for the purpose of diving and can be found at depths between 17 and 30m, making it an ideal site for divers with a bit of experience.  Although new wrecks, the dive is most enjoyable, providing a wide variety of marine life so look out for jacks, rays, barracuda, angel sharks and several types of larger bream that are usually found hovering.
